Through my self-portrait work, I rely on accessing the imaginal realm to personify or enact aspects of my unconscious that are essential to my healing process. I experience this descent into my psyche much like a dream. When I begin one of these photos, I have an intention or slight notion about what inner subject matter I want to explore. From there, I rely on my body, the landscape or place, and my intuition to lead the way. I typically have no idea how the photo will look until I enter into the location and feel into my body.

This photo felt like it belonged in this series, though I didn’t do anything except happen upon it. The idea of ‘the black bag’ is one by the author Robert Bly. The black bag is a metaphor for the disowned parts of our psyche that we store in the unconscious. So it was with humor that I related to this large pile of black bags. I felt rather hopeful about the red tie that was visible.
